The Windhoek Radio Flyers Club was based in the beginning of 1967 from Willy Wehl & Helmut Förster.
However, it is quite certain that both started Modell flying several years earlier already.
By the way: The first RC Equipment that was used was made from Simprop.
As from 1968 on, Armin Böck joined the Club and started Modell flying too. At the first official Flying- field of the Club on the Farm Krumhuk roughly 25km to the south of Windhoek. This was really a Flying- field into the middles of the African bush. The Pilots had there an ongoing fight against very soft Sand on their “runway” and the nearby Mountains. This Mountains “jumped” sometimes unexpected (as Trees and Bushes do this still today too) into the flying paths of their Modell’s.
Within 1969, more Members was found and started flying there as well: Erich Bause, John Brink (who was later a South African Modell Flying Champion too.), Peter Volmar and Hans- Joachim “Moppel“ Pack.
1970 and 1972, Andre van Dyk and “Sammy” Joubert made their first shaky steps into the Air of Namibia. (That time: South West Africa.)
After an intermezzo next to the Windhoek Power Station, the Windhoek Radio Flyers found there Home on the Farm Hoffung at the Heja Game Lodge, 20km east to Windhoek.
A Million thanks to Heinz Dresselhaus. Who gave the Club a piece of his Farm land for free to use as long the Club needs this Place. (He died in march 2016.)
This new Airfield was firstly named to Giel van Wyk, who organized mainly all this on his own: Giel’s Mini Airfield.
Because of a lot of building (Clubhouse) and upgrading the Runways in the years after; this name was changed to today’s name: Windhoek Radio Flyers Mini Airfield.
As the Years gone by, many Members (and their Planes) came and went; too many to name them all here: In several years the Club had more than 50 Members.
All of them are not forgotten and all Members of today are thankful for their work and effort to keep the Windhoek Radio Flyers Club going on for the future.
To be continued…
